Your brakes often try to tell you something before there's a real problem. The trouble is, it's not always obvious what a particular noise or feeling actually means. Here's a guide to some of the most common brake warning signs, and what's usually behind them.
Squeaking or squealing
A high pitched squeal, especially when you first press the brake pedal, is one of the most common brake noises we hear about. Often, this is simply a small metal wear indicator built into the brake pad, designed to make a noise once the pad has worn down to a certain point. It's an early warning, not an emergency, but it does mean your pads should be checked soon.
Squeaking can also happen occasionally due to dust, moisture, or cold weather, and may disappear after the first few presses of the pedal. If it's persistent, though, it's worth getting looked at.
Grinding
A grinding or scraping sound is a more serious sign. This usually means the brake pad has worn down completely, leaving metal to rub against metal. Left alone, this can damage the brake disc, turning a simple pad replacement into a bigger, more expensive repair. If you hear grinding, it's best not to delay getting it checked.
A soft or spongy brake pedal
If your brake pedal feels like it needs pressing further than usual, or has a slightly springy feel, this can point to air in the brake fluid lines, worn brake components, or a fluid level that needs attention. This is one to get checked promptly, as it can affect how quickly and confidently your car stops.
Vibration or juddering
Feeling a vibration through the pedal or steering wheel when you brake, particularly at higher speeds, often points to uneven wear on the brake discs. This is a gradual wear issue rather than a sudden fault, but it's still worth having checked so it doesn't get worse over time.
Brakes pulling to one side
If your car pulls left or right under braking, this can be caused by uneven wear between the two sides, a sticking component, or in some cases, tyre related issues. It's not something to ignore, particularly if it's a noticeable pull rather than a very slight one.
What to do if you notice any of these signs
You don't need to work out exactly what's wrong yourself, that's our job. If you notice any of the signs above, the safest and simplest thing to do is get your brakes checked as soon as you reasonably can. We'll inspect them thoroughly, explain honestly what we've found, and give you a fair price for any work that's genuinely needed.
Your brakes are also checked as standard during every MOT and service, but if something doesn't feel right between visits, there's no need to wait.
