Some garages are just a business. Ours is a family. Michael Key MOT & Servicing has been run by three generations of the same family since 1985, and that's something we're genuinely proud of. Here's a bit about our story, and the people behind the spanners.
How it all started
Michael Key founded the business back in 1985, building a reputation in Long Eaton for honest, reliable work at a fair price. Decades on, that reputation is still what we're known for. Michael is semi retired these days, but he hasn't fully hung up his overalls. You'll still often find him at the garage on Mondays and Tuesdays, keeping an eye on things and catching up with familiar faces.
Matthew joins the business
Michael's son Matthew joined the business in 2004, bringing fresh energy and a determination to grow what his father had built. Matt played a key role in expanding the business to our current, larger premises on Meadow Lane in Long Eaton, giving us the space and facilities to look after more customers without ever losing that personal touch. Today, Matt oversees the business as Managing Director, and he's just as hands on and committed to quality as his father was before him.
Molly joins the team
The next generation joined in 2024, when Matthew's daughter Molly came on board part time. Molly works in the office, helping customers with bookings and queries, and also helps behind the scenes with our marketing, including this very blog. It's fair to say the Key family shows no signs of slowing down.
Three generations, one set of values
What's stayed consistent across forty years and three generations is how we treat our customers. Honesty, quality, and a personal approach aren't just words on a page for us, they're how Michael ran things in 1985, how Matthew runs things today, and the standard Molly is now helping carry forward too.
Many of our customers have been with us for years, some even decades, and we think that says everything about what a family run garage can offer that a big chain simply can't.
